Honor Flight by Women Pilots for Lillian Lorraine Yonally, WWII WASP
On Tuesday, September 15th between 1 and 3 pm, women pilots from the New York-New Jersey Section of the Ninety- Nines will be conducting an Honor Flight for Lillian Lorraine Yonally (age 98), who was a Women’s Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) during WWII and a former member of the Ninety-Nines. The Honor Flight was requested by Jack Yonally, Lillian’s son. The flight will take place over the nursing home where Lillian is a resident and will then continue over the city of Albany. Eight women pilots and their various aircraft will be participating.
From 1942 to 1944 the WASPs, an elite group of 1102 women pilots, flew every type of aircraft in the Army Air Corp’s arsenal (including bombers), ferrying aircraft from factories to military bases, towing gunnery targets, flight testing newly overhauled planes, and a variety of other flying missions in the U.S.
For more information about the Honor Flight, contact Mary Mattocks (Willy), Chairperson
of the Ninety-Nines of Western New York at either mmattock@daemen.edu or 716-435-6132.
